In a word, the Marines want ACHIEVERS. The Marine Corps seeks college students who expect nothing less than success and advancement. The Marines' own standards define the target- to be a Marine officer, a candidate has to possess an extraordinary combination of leadership skills, physical prowess, and academic excellence.
The Corps wants candidates who can demonstrate the ability to succeed under the most difficult circumstances. The model is defined in the military folklore that depicts these exclusive Americans as "the few, the proud" and the "best and brightest."
